How Tom Herman Gambled Texas

Tom Herman has been the hottest commodity over these last two years in regards to social media trending and his accomplishments at The University of Houston during his short two year tenure. Now, with him having left to the University of Texas raises even more concern on the theory of the “What If Houston was placed in a Power 5 Conference, would Herman stay?”

Power Five conferences are generally regarded as having the best college football teams in the country. The establishment of the College Football Playoff  made known the term “Automatic Qualifying Conference” is no longer in use, as the “Bowl Championship Series” has been discontinued. This seems more like “BS” to others and here is why: Five of the six former AQ conferences are now known as the “Power Five conferences” which include the Big Ten Conference, the Big 12 Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Pac-12 Conference, and the Southeastern Conference.  The American Athletic Conference which is home to The University of Houston, SMU, Tulane, and others became the football successor to the Big East Conference, and lost its’ status as a major conference.

Winning

If you are in a city-you better be winning. You are gambling and competing with multitudes of area events  daily, including some major sporting events.  Let us use Houston, Dallas and New Orleans as our primary targets.

Houston stands as the biggest city in Texas and the fourth-most populous city in the United States with approximately 2.3 million residents. The Houston Texas, The Houston Rockets, The Houston Dynamo and The Houston Astros serve as the cities’ professional sports teams. The University of Houston is home to close to 43,000 students and is located right near the heart of downtown Houston.

Dallas is another major city in Texas and is the largest urban center of the fourth-most populous metropolitan area in the United States. The Dallas Cowboys, The Dallas Mavericks, The Texas Rangers, and The Dallas Stars serve as the cities’ professional sports teams. Southern Methodist University is home to close to 12,000 students (more than TCU-Big 12) and is located centrally in downtown Dallas.

New Orleans aka “The Big Easy”and “Nola” is a major United States port, attraction site and the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. The New Orleans Saints, and The New Orleans Pelicans serve as the cities’ professional sports teams. Tulane University is home to close to 14,000 students (more than TCU-Big 12, and SMU) and is located in Uptown New Orleans.

These are boring facts, but BIG FACTS that we have forgotten about with all of the ruckus going on with coaches leaving, and many out there taking it personal.  Unfortunately we forget that Collegiate Sports are a business; a risky one. In 2014 the three schools I had mentioned above have done some major renovations to their facilities to attract recruits, outsiders, and the “Power of Five”. Gerald J. Ford Stadium with SMU, and Yulman Stadium with Tulane can max 30k plus in attendance. TDECU with University of Houston maxes over 40k. But, what does this mean? Fans, boosters, alumni, city natives: where are you when they play at home? Are you there in support win or loss, or only come out of the woodwork when a “Herman” comes in to show it can be done? Art Briles, Kevin Sumlin, and even Tony Levine with a 9-3 season his last year proved to the world that Houston is a place of winners. Tulane, SMU, Rice University, and Houston have a past of winning big games, in big places, in the old best of the best conference: The Southwest Conference.

Money

The SEC is the top monetary producing conference due to football: wins and television. Big 10 is negotiating their rights with the media and each member will receive $44.5 million because of their long term fan base while producing winning performances. The Big 12, and Pac 12 are neck-in – neck, while the ACC brings in the lowest even with its 16 members.

The University of Miami knew what they had to do, just like TCU a few years back and they have less than 11k students yearly. You have to win bowl games, you have to win titles, you have to perform well when you are on national television, and YOU students HAVE TO SHOW UP!

Coach Herman like most coaches want to be the best at their craft while also grooming boys to fine young gentleman off the field. If you tuned in to his press conference yesterday evening and Coach Charlie Strong’s, both exemplify how a  “Great Coach” should lead, and leave if need be. Herman had athletes in tears, than applauses, while Strong the same with several standing by his side at press conferences proving their loyalty and respect.  For those who missed his press conference- listen here. The University of Texas wants another National Title- The University of Texas is in the conference to do so. Briles left to Baylor, and Sumlin left to Texas A&M. Quit blaming the coach, face the gut-wrenching, unfair facts, prove why you are the prime place to be in your city of millions and do not lack the WILL TO WIN no matter the circumstance.

the chaos to be continued…
